Balloon borne spark chamber data on the atmospheric gamma ray flux are reported. The flights were launched from Brazil in 1976-77 and gathered data in the stratosphere. Instrumentation details are provided. Data were taken in the energy ranges 4-10 MeV, 10-25 MeV and over 25 MeV. The flux was proportional to atmospheric pressure. Estimates are made of the latitudinal flux variations. Finally, downward and upward fluxes were found to be equal at about the 40 mbar level.
