The attenuation of stellar radiation by the Earth's atmosphere is very different depending on which wavelength in the electromagnetic spectrum is involved. In this work we describe a basic experiment that allowed us to determine the atmospheric transparency at different wavelengths corresponding to the optical range of stellar radiation, by means of what is known as Bouguer's law. By measuring the changes in the apparent luminosity of a relatively bright star in its path across the sky, we determined the extinction coefficients and, hence, the atmospheric transparency for several wavelengths, by employing different photometric filters. The low cost of the experimental set-up offers very interesting possibilities for its educational use.
