The parameters of shock waves formed during the atmospheric entry of large meteoroids are examined: stand-off distance in the neighborhood of the critical point, thickness of the shock front and thickness of the relaxation layer, duration of ionization relaxation for each level of ionization, thickness of the boundary layer and thickness of the vapor layer. Results are presented in tabular and graphical form as a function of flight speed, altitude, and body radius. Formulas are given for convective heat transfer to the body and electronic heat conduction. A solution is presented for the problem of the shock wave radiation absorption in the layer of meteor vapors, as obtained previously. Based on this study the heat transfer coefficient, Λ, important in the equations of meteor physics, is of order 10-2 for the case where the primary source of heating is the shock wave radiation. This is several times smaller than was obtained previously.
