The polar motion excited by the atmosphere and groundwater storage (the latter being modeled by an annual term only) is integrated in the interval 1976.5-1988.0. It is found that better agreement with astronomically observed polar motion is obtained if the frequency of the free Chandler wobble is assumed to be variable in time and amplitude-dependent. The best fit in a least-squares sense in the whole interval is achieved if the Chandler frequency is approximated by the expression sigma = 0.01456 + 0.0033 e exp -20M rad/day, where M is the total polar motion amplitude in arcsec. The rms difference between the two motions is, in this case, equal to + or - 0.027 arcsec. The residual motion can probably be ascribed to the transfer of water mass with a near Chandler frequency.
