Geomagnetic Field: Variations

Scientific paper

During the intense magnetic storm of March 23 - 24, 1969, an investigation was made of features of the latitudinal asymmetry of the field variations at middle and low latitudes from data on the geomagnetic field variations. For this storm it is shown that the asymmetry of the long-period component (>1 hour) is greater at the lower latitudes than at middle latitudes. The field asymmetry for the short-period variations grows with increasing latitude. The long-period component of the asymmetry correlates better with the activity of the western electrojet than with the eastern electrojet. This correlation is higher at low than at middle latitudes. The observed features of the magnetic field asymmetry are attributable to the nonuniform longitudinal distribution of ions composing the ring current and to the contribution of the field of the longitudinal currents.
