Until now, solar EUV measurements have shown discrepancies of up to 30%. Two new methods are presented, which offer the possibility of reducing discrepancies to less than 10%, using a simple spectrometer on a free flying long term mission with recalibration factors provided by short term mission results, e.g., from Salyut or Spacelab. Attention is given to EUV indices measured during solar cycle 20, noting long term variability of EUV flux. A distinction is made between the evaluation of EUV indices, e.g., flares of ionized species, and to direct EUV flux measurement.
