The Stokes-profile asymmetries (SPA) observed in magnetic lines emerging from active regions of the solar atmosphere are investigated analytically. A liner approach determined by velocity gradients is taken in this preliminary study, to serve as a basis for the actual solution of the inversion problem using observational data. Symmetry relations are formulated and asymmetry expressions related to observed linear and circular-polarization profiles are developed. Numerical computations of velocity-field-response functions in various Milne-Eddington-atmosphere configurations are performed, and plots of typical results are shown. It is shown that SPA are indeed related to velocity fields, but in a complex way, even within the limitations of a linear model. Hence the value of SPA as diagnostics of velocity fields is limited to cases in which the magnetic-field vector is well defined by observations.
