The cause of the asymmetries in limb darkening reported by Neckel and Labs (1987) is discussed on the basis of new stray-light-free observations. It was established that the systematic differences of 5th-order polynomials, found by Neckel and Labs, are produced by light differences in the collimation of spectrograph and telescope, resulting in a different stray-light distribution. It is concluded that the description of differences between two halves of a drift curve or scan is more realistically done by differences in residuals relative to the same analytic profile; and that the high-order polynomials may lead to an unrealistic description of the intensity distribution near the limb.
