Two-dimensional imcompressible magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations of the formation and growth of magnetic islands have been performed. An interface where the magnetic field is higher on one side than on the other and where the thermal pressure is identical on both sides, but the temperature is higher on one side than the other, is considered in a study of the magnetic reconnection process. Reconnection is caused by applying a localized resistivity in the center of the current sheet and the plasma is allowed to enter and exit freely at the boundaries. Time-dependent and steady state magnetic reconnection effects are studied, using a system size with a large extension parallel to the current sheet. Experimental results are also presented.
