A historical review of astrophysics is presented including such topics as the physics of stars, galaxies and the expanding universe, stellar death and rebirth, the solar system, and the evolution of the universe. New technology such as the phototube, radar-required sensitive microwave receivers and antennas, radio observatories, and earth-orbiting satellites is reviewed. Prevailing throughout astrophysical history is the notion that the laws of thermodynamics, gravitation, and radiation which govern the stars are those discovered on earth.
