A proportional control autoguider for optical telescopes has been constructed using the quadrant photosil detector, a low-noise photon counting system. The autoguider has a dynamic range of 10 stellar magnitudes and output options for driving either conventional or stepping motors. Attention is given to system considerations, the approximation of a proportional servo, implementation and performance.
