The influence of detection noise on the accuracy of stellar position measurements is studied. For this purpose the astrometric instrument can be reduced to an objective forming, in its focal plane, an image which, because of the diurnal motion, crosses the optical field in front of a grid. The radiation transmitted by the grid is collected by a light detector which delivers a signal whose temporal evolution permits the instant that the star passes through the centre of the optical field to be determined. The accuracy of this determination is limited by the noise affecting the recorded signal. In this first part the influence of additive noise resulting from photonic fluctuations of the sky background and the photon noise of the star itself are studied. It is shown that for each type of noise source there is an optimal numerical process which makes the best use of the recorded information. The optimisation of the focal grid for the photo-electric astrolabe, as well as for HIPPARCOS, can be studied directly from the expression proposed here.
