The basic features of the design and construction of AST-1200 - the first astronomical telescope in the USSR having a sectional controllable main mirror formed of seven elements are examined. The operation of the telescope is described for the noncoherent addition of the beams with stabilization of the position of the elements of the sectional mirror and when their position is controlled in terms of the image of a star being observed. The results of tests of the telescope, performed at the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory of the USSR Academy of Sciences, are presented. The achieved control accuracy of the elementary mirrors is about 0.1 arcsec.
