Broad dayside auroras have been observed by the Ultraviolet Imager (UVI) onboard the POLAR spacecraft and by the Global Ultraviolet Imager (GUVI) onboard the TIMED satellite. Some times, dayside detached auroras are also detected. Simultaneous measurements indicate that these dayside auroras are associated with the cusp energetic particles (CEP) and large diamagnetic cavities. The CEP has energies from 10 keV to MeV, and are correlated with the strong field turbulence inside the large diamagnetic cavities. One unexpected result is that the dayside auroras and the cusp diamagnetic cavities have been observed at prenoon in the northern hemisphere associated with a duskward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) component. The existing models and MHD simulations predict that a duskward IMF component should produce the magnetic reconnection in postnoon in the northern hemisphere. The observations of the dayside auroras and cusp diamagnetic cavities at prenoon in the northern hemisphere under a duskward IMF component condition provide a challenge for the current theory and simulations. The implications of the association of the broad dayside auroras and the CEPs will be discussed.
