The double-Langmuir-probe method for measuring electric field strength is described, and the main error components of the measurement are assessed, with reference to satellite studies of the ionosphere. A formula is derived which makes it possible to make a preliminary error analysis and to determine the principal requirements on the individual units of the measuring system, as well as the smallest possible measurement error. It is shown that the main contribution to the measurement error is made by the photocurrent and the induction emf.
