The radio optical/analysis of one of a few samples of sub-mJy radio sources with multi-frequency radio coverage (ATESP DEEP1) revealed a quite unexpected class of compact flat/inverted-spectrum radio sources associated with early-type radio galaxies up to redshift 2. Their radio activity might be triggered by AGN, but radio powers and sizes are not consistent with the ones of standard radio galaxy populations. Low radiative efficiency accretion models, possibly in coexistence with outflows and jets have been invoked as a possible explanation. Multi-frequency quasi-simultaneous observations of such objects will give us insight into the accretion mechanism at work, since different accreting regimes show different spectral signatures in the radio domain. Our first results (based on 6, 3 cm and 12 mm ATCA observations of a sub-sample of 13 objects) demonstrated that such faint flat-/inverted-spectrum population is genuine. We now ask to complete the sample and to extend the multi-frequency analysis to higher frequencies (up to 3 mm in a few cases).
