A unit on mechanics, based on Physics by Inquiry1 by the Physics Education Group at the University of Washington, has been tested in a high school classroom. Development of the instructional materials was guided by experience gained from the NSF Summer Institute and academic-year programs for inservice teachers offered by the group. Questions have been administered both in class and online in order to assess student understanding before, during, and after instruction. Specific examples will be presented.
