The Mars Express nominal mission was completed on November 30, 2005, almost two years after the Mars orbit insertion. ASPERA-3 (Analyzer of Space Plasmas and Energetic Neutral Atoms) measures electrons, ions, and energetic neutral atoms (ENAs) in the energy range from a few tens of eV to 30 keV (charged particles) and from 100 eV to 10 keV (ENAs). In this report we summarize the basic characteristics of the ASPERA-3 instrument, describe the science operation strategy and the data collected during the nominal mission, and present the main scientific results achieved so far. This presentation is intended to facilitate collaborations between the ASPERA-3 team and the MGS plasma investigations, as well as with the simulation community modeling the Mars/solar wind interaction.
