Initial production of artificial ionospheric layers by high-power HF heating using the High-Frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP) transmitter was limited to nighttime conditions when the upper hybrid resonance in the natural ionosphere was near the 2nd harmonic of the electron gyrofrequency (2fce). Sweeping the transmitter up in frequency to match 2fce as the layers descend has been found to be extremely effective in reliably producing artificial descending layers at HAARP. This technique has recently been attempted at the 3rd and 4th gyroharmonics when plasma densities have been sufficiently high, with artificial low-altitude plasmas successfully produced at 3fce on multiple occasions during daytime conditions. We compare the results of frequency sweeps through the gyroharmonics with control transmissions at fixed frequencies, sweeping through equivalent frequency ranges away from any gyroharmonics, or sweeping through the gyroharmonics in reverse direction.
