An important means to select certain types of objects from photometric survey data will be their position in two-color diagrams (TCDs). For the Deep Near-Infrared Survey (DENIS) a (I-J) vs. (J-K) diagram is relevant. A severe problem will arise from the overlap of the target objects with numerous field stars along the line of sight. The question of separation is addressed here for low-mass young stellar objects (YSOs). Basic to the calculations are the locations in the TCD of normal lines for main-sequence and giant stars, absolute magnitudes MJ (from Mv), and relative spatial stellar densities (Upgren 1963). For AV = 3.1 and E(B-V) = 1 the color-excesses E(I-J) and E(J-K) are 0.97 and 0.54, respectively. Due to reddening, observed TCDs show a population outside the normal lines. These bins are filled by stars shifted along reddening lines which connect the bins with their respective intrinsic colors. If we assume a spatial dependence of interstellar reddening along the line of sight, then the color excess determines the distance to the stars, and thus the number density within the bin. An artificial TCD is presented in the form of equal-density lines. For the reddening, the simplest case of constant reddening per distance interval was assumed and the limiting magnitudes refer to the sensitivity anticipated for DENIS. The calculations were done for the K band (2.2 micrometers).
