The Ariane release gear system consists of four arms used to support the vehicle during assembly and integration. Contained within each arm is a release mechanism used to restrain the vehicle during engine ignition and then, on command of a signal from the launch site computer, release the vehicle in a controlled manner over 200 ms so that its acceleration increases in a linear fashion. Once the vehicle rises 150 mm a retraction system is employed to withdraw the arms away from the flight path of the rising vehicle. The four release and four retraction mechanisms are operated hydraulically from a common power source. Similar pipe lengths are employed between the power unit and the release arms to ensure simultaneous operation of the mechanisms.
