Measurements are presented of the Doppler shifts of the H-alpha line and the EUV C I lines at the solar disk center which contradict the widely accepted picture of the ascending motion of the spicular matter at a velocity of about 25 km/s. The downward motions with a velocity of several km/s are predominant in the spicule as well as in formations of the transitional region from the chromosphere to the crown. In this case the spicules cannot be considered a source of matter inflow into the corona. It is argued that so-called chromospheric jets observed inside the cells of the chromospheric network can play a role in mass transfer into the corona.
