Methanol masers are thought to be one of the best tracers of recent massive star formation, perhaps even predating the ultracompact HII region phase. They thus offer a unique glimpse into the early phases in the formation of a massive star, which are currently not well understood either observationally or theoretically. We are currently in the process of carrying out a large-scale survey of the Galaxy for methanol masers (the MMB survey). In this proposal we seek to test the hypothesis that methanol masers trace a pre-ultracompact HII region phase by determining their association with hypercompact (HC) HII regions. We will observe a small sample of masers with ATCA in three frequency bands in order to detect compact optically think HII regions and measure their spectral indices.
