Large areas of depressed magnetic field and high plasma density have been repeatedly observed by the MFE, HYDRA, and CAMMICE instruments on POLAR. Past studies indicated that the increased pressure due to the plasma was significantly less than the decrease due to the weaker field, and thus these regions are dramatically out of balance with relation to their surroundings. Four representative events from these studies are presented here: 27 August 1996, 18 September 1996, 27 June 1997, and 11 May 1998. The analysis of these events is then extended in two ways. First, the TIMAS instrument is used for a more accurate measurement of the composition of low-energy plasma, which contains the bulk of the energy density. Second, the full j⃗×B⃗ force is evaluated at the cavity boundaries to determine the validity of the magnetic pressure treatment.
