The real phase structure function for a light wave distorted by a turbulent atmosphere is approximated by a class of polynomials in ρ2 with and without account of the outer turbulence scale. The approximations derived are used to evaluate the wavefront correction errors for membrane mirrors and assess the contribution of the Zernike polynomials and the correlation matrix eigenfunctions to the correction errors.
