Dynamo theory is intended to explain the generation and maintenance of magnetic field in celestial bodies, which has a rapid development in the past 30 years. After an introduction of the basic concepts, the authors will briefly review the two different types of approach and recent results in dynamo theory, with particular emphasis on the physical mechanisms and theoretical concepts.
