A new method of determining moment tensor components from teleseismic relative amplitude observations is applied to three of the earthquakes selected for discussion at the 1985 General Assembly of IASPEI. The method places constraints on the source mechanisms of earthquakes using simple measurements taken from teleseismic records, and reveals both the source type and its orientation explicitly. Well-constrained solutions are obtained for all three earthquakes and the results illustrate the ability of the method to discriminate between different source types and to determine source orientation, for events where there is little separation between P and its surface reflected phases on long-period seismograms.
