A laser microprobe coupled with an inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (LP-ICP-MS) was used to determine Mg, Mn, Sr, and Ba contents of benthic foraminifers in the solid state. Calcite shells of Cibicides wuellerstorfi, Oridorsalis umbonatus, Pyrgo spp., and aragonite tests of Hoeglundina elegans , which were taken from the surface sediments of the northwestern North Atlantic Ocean, were ablated by a laser beam. Multiple measurements were achieved on single tests since the diameters of ablation pits (20-50 m) are significantly smaller than those of the shells (~250 m). Mg/Ca, Mn/Ca, and Ba/Ca of the ablated materials are significantly affected by Fe---Mn oxide coatings and extraneous Ba-bearing phases, and Sr/Ca is not noticeably influenced by those contaminants. There is no substantial variation of Sr/Ca within and between shells of a foraminiferal species. On the contrary, Sr/Ca is species-dependent: Sr/Ca of Pyrgo spp. is three times as high as that of H. elegans , and nearly twice as high as those of C. wuellerstorfi and O. umbonatus .
