Seismogram analysts at local or regional centres often have to make rapid epicentral determinations with only a limited number of P-arrivals at hand. Under such circumstances, standard location procedures may provide rather poor results. To abridge this drawback, we developed a fast teleseismic location program based upon a non-linear algorithm. The new procedure has been tested by re-locating 22 underground nuclear explosions, at three different test sites, recorded by six stations of the Swedish seismographic network. When compared with available PDE solutions, 15 explosions were located with an accuracy of ~ 0.5° or better. In three cases deviations from PDE epicentres were ~ 1.5 °. For four Nevada explosions the location algorithm converged to wrong (local) minima. Several location runs seem to be inevitable to minimize the occurrence of such cases.
