The adequacy of the two-layer model of Lloyd and Haerendel for describing the behavior of an ionospheric irregularity is verified by numerical simulation of large plasma cloud dynamics. The background ionosphere is approximated by a set of conductive layers with ion mobilities and concentrations corresponding to the real ionospheric conditions. The polarization electric field produces positive and negative image clouds, i.e. plasma density enhancements and depletions in each layer. Their intensity, form and orientation turn out to change with height depending on the local conditions.
