For slightly nonideal plasmas, the influence of the environment on the interaction between an electron and a positive ion may be approximated by the Debye-Hückel (static screened Coulomb) potential. The application of this potential to the calculation of bound states will, however, yield far too large level shifts, unless the reaction of the electron on the plasma cloud charge is taken into account. With this reaction included, the deviations of the energy levels and transition probabilities from their values for an undisturbed Coulomb field become much smaller than reported in previous calculations, for hydrogenic as well as for nonhydrogenic systems. Examples are given for the cases of hydrogen, argon and cesium.
