The feasibility of using the Lloyd-Haerendel (1973) two-layer model for an adequate description of the dynamics of a strong ionospheric irregularity is assessed. A three-dimensional numerical somulation of the evolution of a large-scale nonlinear cloud in a strong external electric field is carried out with allowance for the redistribution of background plasma induced by a polarization field. It is shown that ionospheric disturbances connected with the inclusion and evolution of the cloud are not similar at different heights. However, the three-dimensional calculations of the cloud drift and deformation agree well with calculations in the two-layer approximation.
