A pair of aluminium trapezoids has been designed to obtain double mode conversion of ultrasonic longitudinal energy, driven by a barium titanate plate, placed at the input end of the system. The shear energy generated at the inclined plane of the driving trapezoid has been channelised through the specimen, at the end of which the receiving trapezoid converts it into longitudinal energy, which is detected by a barium titanate plate at the output end of the system. The antisymmetry of the trapezoid pair system has been exploited to avoid most of the reflected longitudinal energy in the driving trapezoid from entering into the specimen. The longitudinal energy thus avoided has been drained off through an aluminium bar. Particulars of the theory and of the design of the trapezoids are discussed. Employing the above system, ultrasonic shear wave velocities in a few metallic and rock samples are determined and reported.
