A distinct coastal effect in the magnetic field variations is a characteristic feature of Cuba. Equatorial ionospheric currents are the principal source of the alternating geomagnetic field in the region of Cuba. This enhances both the diurnal geomagnetic variations and the level of magnetic activity. In the present paper, these variational anomalies are analyzed, using a method proposed by Wiese (1965). The coastal effect is interpreted on the basis of a model in the form of an infinite conduction band.
