Solar Eclipses: 1991 January 15 - 16
Scientific paper
An annular solar eclipse of the Sun will occur on Tuesday, 15 January 1991 and Wednesday, 16 January 1991. It will be followed by an associated penumbral lunar eclipse on 30 January. The central path of this annular eclipse will include well-populated areas in southwestern Australia, Tasmania, and New Zealand. At maximum, approximately 86.4% of the Sun's disk will be obscured and the maximum duration of annularity will be about 7 min 49 s. Because the track will cross the International Date Line, by local times the eclipse will occur on the morning of 16 January at the beginning of the path and occur on the evening of 15 January at the end of the path. The eclipse belongs to saros series number 131. The last preceding eclipse in this series was the annular solar eclipse of 4 January 1973; the next eclipse in the series will be the annular solar eclipse of 26 January 2009. Prior to this eclipse, an annular solar eclipse occurred on 26 January 1990 over Antarctica, and a total solar eclipse will occur on 22 July 1990 over Finland, the arctic regions of the Soviet Union, and the Aleutian Islands. The next solar eclipse following the 15-16 January 1991 event will be the long total eclipse of 11 January 1991.
