The magnetospheric magnetic field model of Tsyganenko is used to compute the annual oscillations in the surface magnetic field during various levels of magnetic activity in the magnetosphere. It is shown that the annual oscillation due to the ring, tail and magnetopause currents appears as a modulation of the diurnal pattern which has both UT and LT components. The diurnal structure of the annual wave in declination is in local time only and it can be used to explain the nature of the observed annual variation in declination at low latitudes.
