The pitch angle anisotropies of radiation belt ions are investigated using data obtained from ISEE 1 and Explorer 45 satellites. It is found that the ions exhibit quiet time and pitch angle anisotropies which vary significantly and nonmonotonically with L-shell values and energies in the range of 20 keV to several MeV. Data from Explorer 45 measurements from June 1972 and ISEE 1 measurements from November 1977 through December 1978 show that the radial distribution of the pitch angle anisotropies contains one major minimum for most energies in the midrange L shells. The data confirmed 1972 finding of nonmonotonic anisotropy distribution but with some modifications: later quiet time distributions showed a broader region of low anisotropy and less regular L-shell dependence than the data from 1972; and systematic trends were found in the anisotropy which were clearly dependent on both L-shell and energy. The comparison of the two quiet time data sets separated by six years suggests that there may also be anisotropy dependence on the phase of the solar cycle.
