The paper presents exact solutions to problems of the stability of two anisotropic gravitating systems of different geometry: a finite-thickness quiescent layer and a finite-radius rotating cyinder. In both cases, the anisotropic gravitational instability which arises is of the Jeans type and is oscillatory in nature. It is found that, in a gravitating layer, this instability is due to the build-up of exchange-Jeans modes.
