An analytical transport model of the nighttime equatorial F-region is presented which can be used to test numerical models of the equatorial ionosphere and to determine aeronomic parameters on the basis of measurement data. The model relies on the fact that in nighttime conditions the transition region from predominant electromagnetic drift to predominant diffusion is at a height of about 500 km. Expressions are derived which make it possible to describe such features of the equatorial F-region as the plateau and subsequent decline of NmF, and the stabilization of hmF during nighttime.
