Scientific paper

The paper presents an analytical method for investigating the response of the F2-layer to an internal gravity wave (IGW) with an arbitrary horizontal and vertical structure. Attention is given to the combined effect of the IGW, the ionization source, and thermospheric wind with prescribed vertical profiles and diurnal variations. The analytical formulas are used to calculate electron density at various heights and at the maximum, and to determine the height of the F2-maximum as a function of time.
