The paper presents a theoretical study of the excitation of an ionospheric waveguide by a source including sources of lateral current. The lateral wave in an ionospheric MHD waveguide is investigated, and the properties of normal waves and the lateral wave are compared. The excitation of the ionospheric MHD waveguide is examined for a specific source: a pulsed magnetic dipole. Good agreement between calculations and experimental data is noted.
