The paper examines the feasibility of performing the analytical approximation of electron density profiles near the main maximum of the ionosphere on the basis of solutions of the continuity equations with allowance for the variability of the medium. A comparison of experimental and theoretical profiles is used to evaluate the error of the analytical approximation in the case when there is only incomplete data about the vertical electron distribution in the F-region. The results indicate that the proposed approximation will facilitate the interpretation of ionospheric-sounding data.
