An analytic model of electric field distribution in the magnetosphere is constructed and electric field structure relative to magnetic disturbance conditions is investigated. A uniform electric field in the polar cap is considered, and it is assumed that (1) permeance of geomagnetic lines of force is infinitely large, i.e., lines of force are equipotential, (2) the effect of the hot plasma in the magnetosphere on electric field distribution is negligibly small and is manifested only at the closed-field-line boundary and near the plasmapause, where it can be accounted for by selection of boundary conditions, (3) location of plasmapause and cold plasma concentration gradient in the latter are known, and (4) the ionosphere potential in the plasmapause relative to the plasmapause itself is equal to zero. An equation is derived which describes the configuration and location of the plasmapause relative to geomagnetic activity. The investigation allows determination of the structure and magnitude of the convection field in the earth magnetosphere, as well as determination of the location and configuration of the plasmapause relative to geomagnetic conditions.
