Some newly discovered characteristics of the Tisserand constant (J) are examined. In particular, it is noted that the N(J) distribution maximum does not correspond to the region predicted by the capture theory. The values of J follow a power law with a discontinuity at 2.670. A relationship between e and cos i in the Tesserand formula is observed only for a group of comets with longitudes of perihelion in the range 43-103 deg. Among the original long-period comets, the correlation between e and i is particularly pronounced in periodic comets with longitudes of perihelion near 90 deg. It is concluded that only some of the periodic comets have been captured from the set of long-period comets.
