To understand the environmental conditions that could lead to the formation and stability of liquid brines [Renno et al., 2009; Zorzano et al., 2009] and the diurnal cycle of the water vapor at the Phoenix landing site, water vapor pressure measurements by the Phoenix mass spectrometer [Hoffman et al., 2008] are compared with those derived by the Thermal and Electrical Conductivity Probe (TECP) [Zent et al., 2009]. The interpretation of atmospheric water vapor measurements with either the mass spectrometer or the TECP are complex because of the low water vapor content of the Martian atmosphere, the lack of measurements of the air temperature near the TECP humidity sensor, and water adsorption by the mass spectrometer plumbing. Thus, a detailed comparison of these two independent measurements is crucial for accessing the uncertainties of the humidity measurements at the Phoenix landing site. Supporting such a comparison, contemporaneous environmental measurements by the Lidar and the Meteorological Station (MET) onboard the Phoenix lander are used as auxiliary sources.
