A coarse representation of the temperature field is used, based on three parameters: the global mean value, the mean vertical gradient, and the horizontal equator-pole differential. The first two of these parameters are estimated directly from published temperature measurement data, while the third is determined indirectly from data on zonal wind velocity. The process of development of a convective boundary layer in the daytime hemisphere is considered. Conditions for existence of a zonally symmetric steady state Hadley-type circulation are evaluated.
