A physical-mathematical model for the dynamics of the auroral bulge is examined which takes into account in a self-consistent manner the effects of magnetospheric-ionospheric interaction through field-aligned currents. Particular cases which admit a rigorous analytical solution to the system of equations describing the motion of the ionospheric projection of a plasma tube are analyzed, and it is shown that when the surface of the plasma tube is turned toward the motion, it is unstable with respect to small perturbations. Numerical calculations are used to determine the temporal evolution of the bulge, which is characterized by velocities close to those observed.
