In the present paper, the influence of internal gravity waves on the E and F1 regions of the mid-latitude ionosphere is studied by integrating the continuity equation, balance equation, and the equations of motion on the ionospheric plasma. Use is made of a multilayer model of internal gravity waves which takes dissipative processes into consideration. The modifications introduced to the continuity equation to fit the requirements of the lower ionosphere are noted. The evolution in time of the vertical electron density profiles under the action of internal gravity waves is illustrated.
