A pulsation is of short duration when the interesting part has less than about 5-30 oscillations depending on the number of resonances, the selectivity, the relative amplitude, and the signal noise ratio. This is very often the case for Pi2 and Pc3-4-5. The classical analysis cannot provide valuable results for short duration, nondeterministic signals. Parametric methods such as autoregressive moving average filter (ARMA) and maximum entropy (MEM) can be used for signal to noise ratio greater than 5 dB. The present investigation has the objective to encourage geophysicists to make more intensive use of these methods. Attention is given to the estimation of parameters, filtering, and aspects of state vector projections.
