Satellite drag variations are driven mainly by variations in thermospheric neutral density. We have analyzed the occurrence of high-latitude large density perturbations along a satellite orbit using seven years (2001 through 2008) of CHAMP accelerometer data. We map the statistical locations of these maxima and examine the correlation of events with the magnitude of the Interplanetary Magnetic and Electric fields. To further understand thermospheric responses to solar wind energy deposition, we estimate the energy input required to produce these high latitude neutral density enhancements. The influence of neutral winds along the satellite velocity vector potentially contaminating affecting density determination is also examined using theoretical models. The observed maximum density variations are shown to be associated with localized Joule heating and effects of thermospheric winds.
